Amy Martin’s In Your Dreams follows teenager Zara “Zip” McKee as she navigates the small-town high school of Titusville, Illinois. Although Zip is the basketball star and top of her class, Zip’s junior year is anything but typical after she meets new kid Kieran Lanier. After he passes out at his desk on his first day, Zip befriends him and finds out that he has narcolepsy, a disorder that causes him to randomly fall asleep. This in itself is enough to make Kieran stand out, but Zip later finds out that there is more to him and his curious family than she could ever prepare for. After building trust and a blossoming teenage romance, Kieran reveals to Zip that he has visions of the future during his narcoleptic episodes. This revelation plunges Zip onto a dangerous path, especially after a secret is revealed about a mysterious man Kieran keeps seeing in his visions.

I loved Amy Martin’s first installment of the In Your Dreams series. The novel was paced perfectly, making for a quick read that was hard to put down. The plot contained just the right amount of intrigue and Martin did an incredible job of dropping clues at the right moments, while introducing new mysteries for the characters. Now let me gush about these characters for a bit: I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised by the nuances of these characters, especially Zip. Martin writes in the first person from Zip’s point of view, and captures the teenage vernacular wonderfully, without compromising the quality of the narrative. Zip and Kieran navigate the real and fantastical curve-balls that Martin throws at them with a fresh, down-to-earth approach that is attractive and easily relatable. I am looking forward to reading the next installment and seeing what the future has in store for Zip and Kieran.
