Indelicate Deception by V.S. Kemanis is a poignant literary novel exploring family secrets, self-deception, and the unbreakable bond between a father and daughter. Caty Robertson grows up idolizing her father, Roy, a loving and resilient Vietnam veteran-turned-chef. Though her childhood is filled with his warmth and vivid stories, there’s one glaring omission: her mother, Lenore. Caty constructs a romanticized version of her parents’ love story whilst she's young, and this is set against the backdrop of 1970s Berkeley in a time of social upheaval and personal transformation. Lenore, a passionate law student, and Roy, a wounded soldier, were bound by love but divided by race, class, and ideals. When Caty begins to question why Lenore disappeared from their lives, she embarks on a quiet but determined investigation. What she uncovers shatters her carefully crafted narrative, forcing her to confront the painful realities of love, loss, and self-delusion. With evocative prose and a gripping emotional core, Kemanis delivers a tale that questions how well we ever truly know the ones we love.

Author V.S. Kemanis offers readers a beautifully written and emotionally rich novel that lingers in your mind between chapters because of the messages it delivers about how important family influences are in our development and future happiness. Kemanis masterfully weaves a multigenerational mystery that has superb pacing and a lot of interesting revelations, and this is mixed with authenticity and close narration that lets you feel everything Caty feels in heart-wrenching detail. I was also really interested in the subtle discussion of the narratives we build to protect ourselves and how it feels when that all falls away. Overall, Indelicate Deception is both an intimate character study and a larger reflection on societal change that I would certainly recommend.

Caty Robertson, an interracial woman, was raised by her loving and dedicated father, Roy, a Vietnam war veteran. She grew up listening to stories about her parents' passionate, whirlwind romance and saw them as the ideal couple. Roy and Caty's mother, Lenore, met in 1970s Berkeley. Even though they came from different socioeconomic backgrounds, they fell madly in love and decided to start a family together. But as Caty grew older, so did her curiosity about unraveling the events surrounding her mother's sudden departure. Then comes the day when she finally confronts Roy about her mother’s absence, which he claims was civil. This sets Caty on the path to uncovering the secrets hidden in her parents' pasts. When she discovers the complete truth, will it change her perception of herself and her parents? Indelicate Deception by V.S. Kemanis has all the details.

This compelling tale features a well-developed narrative about family ties, abandonment issues, family discoveries, generational conflict, identity, and self-acceptance. V.S. Kemanis' phenomenal storytelling abilities radiate through each character's unique story arc. Roy does his best to fill the void that Lenore's absence leaves in Caty's life. Yet, a large part of Caty's identity longs to reconnect with the mother she only knows through faded memories and stories. Caty's journey to self-discovery reveals the all-too-realistic truth about parents and their offspring--children naturally want to feel connected to their parents. But when this ideal isn't achieved, true inner healing can only begin when children confront the pain created by parental rejection. The author's rendition of family dynamics is relatable, complex, and visceral in every way. She does not avoid exploring the evocative and murky aspects of self-exploration. I highly recommend V.S. Kemanis' Indelicate Deception to fans of profound and intense dramas about family life and self-discovery.
