The bitter divorce between Daniel and Jessica Hansen transforms into a lethal contest over their estate in Mike Skillicorn’s Interlaced. Jessica is furious that Daniel refuses to leave her with sixty percent of their assets and will do anything to secure that percentage, even if Daniel is the one who has earned it. Jessica digs into the dark web and hires Riley Garrick, a destitute, alcoholic ex-military sniper selling his services as “RG Pest Control” to murder her husband and claim the entire fortune. Meanwhile, Daniel stumbles upon a former lieutenant in the army and now defense lawyer Angela Mersey executing a drug dealer in Raisin Park. In a desperate bid to retain his wealth and save his own life, Daniel contracts her to kill Jessica. What follows is a puzzle that is as dizzying as it is exhilarating.
Interlaced features morally complex characters, and the idea of a couple putting a hit on each other raises the stakes and the tension. While Daniel and Jessica are compelling characters, Angela appears to take center stage with her vigilante tendencies. Having suffered rape in the army and been blamed for it, she makes sure she executes criminals, even those she defends successfully as a lawyer. Mike Skillicorn skillfully orchestrates multiple plotlines, infusing the story with tension and keeping the pacing brisk. I was enthralled by how the author successfully transforms a mundane suburban divorce into a chilling noir thriller. The story shifts nimbly between different perspectives: Jessica’s entitlement, Daniel’s crumbling sanity, Angela’s surgical ruthlessness, and Riley’s hapless desperation. These multiple POVs create suspense and make the book hard to put down.
