In Jack Longfoot and the Case of the Missing Starlet, P.L. Mendoza takes readers back to the neon-lit world of the rabbit detective donning his famous trench coat and tattered fedora. This time, the animals have noticed that the city is shifting – animal actors that were once adored on the silver screen are being eclipsed by humans! Everyone knows that with fading fame comes desperate acts. When Cleo Amara, a once-celebrated feline starlet, vanishes just as her career revival is poised to begin, Jack is hired by powerful producer Grant Kingsley to track her down before a scandal destroys the production. Jack takes on the case and soon discovers a tangled web of jealousy, ambition, and betrayal. He initially suspects that Cleo’s disappearance is a publicity stunt, but the stakes turn deadly and lead Jack into some dangerous corners of the city. Loyalty is a rare trait in this underworld, and secrets are the new currency. But time is running out. Can Jack uncover the truth before Cleo’s light fades for good?
P. L. Mendoza has done it again, writing with a sharp noir sensibility—blending those well-loved classic detective tropes, such as smoky bars, late-night stakeouts, and hidden motives, with the inventive twist of anthropomorphic characters that feel human. There is a great balance in the pacing; it’s moody and atmospheric. There are tense moments filled with revelations. The contrasting characters are done well, showcasing Jack’s weary integrity, Ruby Pearl’s simmering envy, and Cleo’s fragile glamour. Each character’s motivations are believable. Fans of Blacksad will recognize the richly textured worldbuilding, while those who loved the genre-bending mystery of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? will find similar delights here. Jack Longfoot and the Case of the Missing Starlet isn’t just a detective story—it’s about fading fame, betrayal, and survival in a city that never sleeps.
