P.L. Mendoza’s Jack Longfoot and the Case of the White-Tailed Phantom is a children’s mystery about a grey jackrabbit who is a detective. He gets a thrill out of chasing the jobs others think are better left alone. As the story opens, readers are introduced to Detective Longfoot as he investigates a theft for his client, Mr. LeFleur, who owns the Chez Bijou jewelry store. Of course, the police, especially the burly bulldog, Seargant Tony Havers, are not too pleased to see him. However, as Detective Longfoot observes the crime scene and is given a run-through by Officer Bobby Chestnut, he becomes aware that the perpetrator of the theft was able to bypass all the alarms. No one knows how this jewelry thief looks except for a blur of its white tail; thus, it was nicknamed the White-Tailed Phantom. As Jack Longfoot begins to dig into the heist, he finds himself caught up in a twisted game of secrets, a string of crimes, and a phantom that is somehow tied to a scientific conspiracy. The question is, will Jack Longfoot be able to solve this tricky puzzle before it takes him deeper into the city’s underworld and he risks losing this phantom’s trail?
P.L. Mendoza does a great job of reeling children into this Dick Tracy-style detective series. The writing has a cinematic style that makes it immersive for readers. Readers will also be able to connect with Jack on a deeper level when all the chasing after this phantom begins to wear on him and frustrate him. The pacing is appropriate for the narrative; it’s moderate and never loses momentum. Readers will also enjoy the other characters, such as the enigmatic Vinnie, and supporting characters like Lieutenant Rourke and Felicity. The character development is done with such great care. For example, Jack contends with a moral dilemma while also dealing with the consequences of others’ choices. Fans of urban fantasy and anthropomorphic mysteries will find echoes of Mouse Guard by David Petersen in its use of anthropomorphic characters facing real danger.
