Jay had already lost his father at a very young age, and later he lost his mother, making him an orphan. Jay doesn’t want to be sent to foster care, so he runs away and boards a train to escape, with the intention of eventually getting to California. Things start going bad for Jay from the start as he gets humiliated and robbed by railroad cops. As things unfold, Jay meets Liberty Two on the train, and the two become friends. Liberty Two is a hobo and has been on the road for many years. He has several survival skills. Once he senses danger, he advises Jay they should jump off the train. Jay ends up getting hurt, but Liberty Two doesn’t leave him. Later, they meet other homeless people who share their food with them and also save them from getting arrested. How will things unfold in Jay by W. Royce Adams?

Jay by W. Royce Adams is wonderfully written, and once you start reading it, there is no putting it down. This thought-provoking work shows how a system designed to help the most vulnerable can fail. It also got me thinking about possible reforms that can help social welfare systems to prevent exploitation by those who use such systems to take advantage of children and other vulnerable members of the community. Other themes covered, such as kindness and helping those in need, will also resonate with many readers. The plot flowed seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion for the reader, and Royce also ensured all events were vividly described, which helped create a mental picture of what was happening. Readers will also appreciate the excellent narration, which added to the overall beauty of the work. I look forward to reading something else by this author.
