Jemima Jellyfish: Just a Little Bit Jealous by Gensy James offers a delightful glimpse into the colorful underwater world of a jellyfish named Jemima and her animated family. She lives in a jumbo-sized home with her many siblings. The story sparkles with exciting preparations for a birthday that’s a few days away and is sure to be filled with joy and jubilation. There are welcoming arrivals and playful games as Jemima starts to feel the happiness that only a celebration can bring. However, not everything runs smoothly as she finds herself just a little bit jealous of her talented eel pals and their impressive gifts and skills. Through lively festivities, the book gently shows emotions in a way that kids can easily relate to, along with lessons about relationships and self-worth. Can jealousy turn into kindness so we can learn to appreciate what we have?
I chose Jemima Jellyfish: Just a Little Bit Jealous by Gensy James in part because my own name begins with J, and I instantly loved how the jellyfish were shaped as whimsical J’s, curling and floating through each page. I enjoyed how Jemima’s world is portrayed as radiant and fun, from the party games to the tiny details, like the treats. I found myself reliving similar gatherings from my own childhood. The writing style is warm and gently rhyming in places, making every scene engaging and easy to read aloud. As an educator, I especially appreciated the positive way Jemima’s moods were explored and resolved, offering young readers thoughtful cues about kindness and friendship without ever feeling too serious. Amurtha Godage’s artwork truly brings the setting to life through the wavy shapes and the bold colors used. This story, which emphasizes the letter “J”, is a sweet choice for anyone learning about letters, emotions, and the value of having good buddies.
