Get swept up in the cluttered world of Jess and the Monstrous Mess by Penny Nolan. Jess's room has always been a disaster, but one day it becomes a whole new level of mess when her belongings transform into a rascally monster named Herbie. As if that was not enough, Herbie unintentionally scares Jess's beloved guinea pig. Frightened, Pipsie runs and hides. With Pipsie lost in the clutter, Jess has no choice. To find Pipsie, she must accomplish the miserable chore of cleaning up the mess! It is a daunting task. Surprisingly, Jess elicits Herbie’s help. Together they make a game of the cleanup. Will Jess be able to conquer this monstrous challenge? And what will become of Herbie?

The story is set in a child's messy room, making it entirely relatable. Penny Nolan creatively addresses the ominous truth about chores in Jess and the Monstrous Mess. The pivotal moment in the story is when Jess chooses her guinea pig, Pipsie, over keeping her room messy, making her a hero. Even Herbie, the antagonist, joins the search for Pipsie. The story shows that imagination, creativity, teamwork, and collaboration can make a less-than-exciting chore much more bearable and even fun. The whimsical illustrations by Elmira Eskandariare enhance the story and captivate the reader's imagination. Full of heartwarming moments and loads of creativity, this tale will have readers laughing and cheering for Jess until the very end. Jess and the Monstrous Mess will become a fast favorite for storytime and bedtime as well.
