From the first page of Joaquin Around Mexico City: A Doggie Adventure Story, there is a spirited atmosphere. As a traveling dog who wants to share his discoveries, he begins by gaily introducing his buoyant and curious self in English and Spanish. Upon arrival, his first impressions include a reaction to how unexpectedly large Mexico City is and, much to his pleasure, that the city is chock full of dogs. As he continues his visit, he is fascinated by the city’s multicultural atmosphere. Moving from place to place, Joaquin finds that there are riches everywhere. Whether appreciating an encounter with a palm (paw) reader, marveling at the lifestyle of the ancient Aztecs, wending through teeming markets, or being eager to try aromatic treats, there is a common thread.
Julie Dugan’s intention—with Joaquin at her side—is to create a panorama of enticing sights that will capture the attention of the youngest reader. By the journey's end, Mexico City might well become a place that appears on a child’s growing bucket list. The story of Joaquin Around Mexico City entices as it educates. There is a continuum of marvels, such as the meaning of the Basilica of Guadalupe, an introduction to Frida Kahlo’s artistic magic, and most of all, the value of melding past and present. Vivid illustrations highlight the joys of Mexican culture. The tale is part of a series that exposes children to fun and informative experiences that others might say are 'over their heads.' Instead, Julie Dugan offers young readers a wealth of imaginative gateways to a wondrous world.
