Journey into Mystery is a thought-provoking collection of poetry by Lea Harrington. It has themes of change, hope, decay, and renewal. Lea writes of her trials and victories mostly around her experience with psychoses. Although she states that the poems were not written during her psychoses, they were written shortly before and after these experiences. The book is laid out in three parts, where several poems follow a short introduction of events. The three parts are about her three psychotic experiences and about what she was perceiving, observing, dreaming, and experiencing at the time. A strong use of simile and metaphor binds together the events, her psyche, and nature into a whole, and form the basis for this exploration of the hidden recesses of the mind or psyche.
Although Journey into Mystery: A Poetic Exploration of the Hidden Psyche deals with serious and perhaps heavy subject matter, Lea Harrington's poetry brings lightness and easiness to it. This extends a more open invitation to readers to join Lea in this journey. Coincidentally, my psychosis count is also at three, and therefore I could truly relate to and learn from Lea's experiences, and I love it when I am made to feel part of a writer's story. Her use of simile and metaphor, especially as it pertains to her mind and nature, creates a sense of calm and I frequently felt “understood” by her elegant way of putting things. Journey into Mystery is a beautifully crafted anthology that I am sure readers will read and appreciate more than a few times.
