Any situation can be viewed by people either positively or negatively. It depends on the mindset of each child as to which point of view they will take. Journey to the Bright Side will help young readers have a more optimistic view when facing different circumstances. The story is about Pickles the Porcupine, who had a bad attitude at home. He didn't want to do things like sharing his toys or taking a bath. His mom created a way to help him see the world more positively. She tasked him with finding the bright side. Pickles began his search by embarking on an incredible journey where he met various animals who explained to him in their own way what the bright side was. At the end of the book, Kimberly Hirsch adds a section of questions for children to reflect on and give their interpretation of the bright side.
Kimberly Hirsch shares a message that will be helpful to all children. With a negative attitude, it will be harder for them to live together with others and perform well. Conversely, a positive attitude can manifest differently for each person. I liked that Pickles had different answers about the meaning of the bright side so that readers can understand how a concept can be different for everyone and still be correct. The drawings are charming and they show different places at various times of the day, which makes Pickles' journey look like a real adventure. Journey to the Bright Side will encourage children to think positively before acting and to create a congenial environment for themselves and others.
