Just Because You’ve Been in Prison Doesn’t Mean You’re a Criminal by Philip van Heusen is an eye-opener for those who wish to understand the life of the incarcerated and the rehabilitation process. This book is also dedicated to his true friends who continued to stick by him even though he was imprisoned. His wisdom, experience, and knowledge of criminals inside and outside prison make him an ideal counselor. He shows us how to reach out to those who have fallen and to walk with them along the path to restoration. He brings a wide variety of subjects together and expresses the value of honesty, moral boundaries, self-control, and perseverance. He discusses the criminal mind as opposed to the non-criminal mind and shows the consequences and differences. Philip describes how we all can live biblically and become who God wants us to be. Affirmations that you are a good person count. For him, it is important not to label yourself as a criminal just because you've been in prison. Non-criminals can be accused of or even commit a crime.

In Just Because You’ve Been in Prison Doesn’t Mean You’re a Criminal, Philip van Heusen delivers the message that we always have another chance in life to recover from our mistakes. Good people have bad days and can make mistakes. One should take the time to get to know the formerly incarcerated instead of standing in judgment without knowing the facts of the case or the person’s character. Some mistakes are forgiven, others are punished. When you follow Christ, you learn how to be forgiving. The book’s purpose is to encourage us to lean on faith and live obeying the rules of a civilized society. Philip motivates us to look for new ways to improve. The content and writing style of the book show his compassion, knowledge, and appropriate application of techniques to shepherd the lost. For me, it is a valuable book that reflects Philip’s long-term association with the incarcerated, giving us a chance “to look inside” a criminal mind and teaching us how to facilitate introspection and rehabilitation. This work is highly recommended.
