Kandy Hamm by Michelle Path is the story of Kandy Hamm, a strange girl who wears long, flowing dresses and lots of jewellery. She had unruly blonde hair which had a mind of its own, and she was never seen without her candy pink top hat draped with long, pastel colored organza ribbons. She wins a gazillion dollars in a raffle and she knew the only logical thing she wanted to do with all the money was to go shopping. She goes to the mall with the ambition of making her dreams a reality, though the many colors, posters, and shapes are tempting. But she does not give up on making her dreams happen and, as the story ends, readers get to know the real identity of Kandy Hamm.

The story is magical and the author pulls readers into the story with her adept narration and vivid descriptions. The illustrations are beautiful and captivating; they give the story a good movement, and breathe life into the characters and scenes. It is an excellent bedtime story-telling book and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Kandy Hamm’s character is well portrayed and her uniqueness and individuality stand out as the story progresses. The book introduces children to a whole lot of new things and new words, which can be explained to them by their parents or their teacher. The author’s imagination and creativity shine through the story and the book is a fun read that is both informative and educational.
