Keeper of the Mirror: The Portly Lady is the second book in the Keeper of the Mirror series by Theresa Nellis. Thirteen-year-old Peter is desperate to bring his father, Bael, back from the prison in the Outer World. Embracing his new dark elf identity, Peter attacks the people he holds responsible for Bael's captivity, Zack and the Powells, Kate, and Tom. To his surprise, Peter learns that the director of their former foster home, The Portly Lady, is actually a powerful dark elf herself, on top of being Bael's mother and Peter's grandmother. With Bael and Peter seeking to possess the Powell family heirlooms, The Amulet of Ivae, and the Book of Secrets, Zack, Sully, and the Powells must prepare for a final confrontation. But can Zack execute the terrible burden he finds himself laden with?
Author Theresa Nellis continues to build a sprawling world filled with magic and lore that young adult fantasy lovers will devour with relish. This time, the characters feel even more fleshed out, as the likes of Zack, Peter, Tom, and Kate particularly undergo major changes in their lives that will probably have long-term effects on their character arcs in the future books of the series. The plot is full of drama, tension, mystery, and plenty of action sequences that will have you on the edge of your seat. What makes the action so compelling is that you can feel the stakes, and the protagonists never come through without suffering losses themselves. Keeper of the Mirror: The Portly Lady is suited for kids and young adult fantasy fans alike.
