Kindled Embers by K.C. Simos is an emotional rollercoaster of a tale. Eliza, a twelve-year-old maidservant in King Christian VIII’s palace, experiences a bittersweet feeling when her guardian, Jonas, returns from the war missing a leg. He sacrificed himself to save the king’s life, but at what cost? Jonas no longer feels worthy of being with Louise, the woman he loves. On the other hand, the king, having witnessed the atrocities of war, wishes to marry off his eldest son, Anders, to a stronger nation to gain an ally to ward off future conflicts. Anders, already fighting off romantic advances from Henriette, a local noble lady, wishes to marry for love. Amid all this drama, a national treasure, a green pearl, is stolen. This theft launches the characters on a journey that changes all their lives.

I greatly enjoyed reading Kindled Embers by K.C. Simos. The twists at the end of the plot caught me by surprise. Simos does a great job with the pacing of this work. I appreciate how well-developed all the characters were. Their personalities shine through their dialogue, mannerisms, and actions. I became emotionally invested even in minor characters. I found myself laughing and crying several times. This is a very short read, but this story will stay with me for a long time. While Simos took inspiration from several classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, this story is very much his own creative work. Kindled Embers is a part of The Dryad’s Cede trilogy, and after finishing this book, I want to continue the series. I strongly recommend Kindled Embers by K.C Simos to everyone.
