“The line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” King Rex and the Cowboy Mafia is a true crime story by Phil Hamman, Sandy Hamman, and Fred Boff. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) spent a lot of time and money trying to break up the narcotics trade during the 1970s to 1980s. Special Agent Fred Boff led a team that often went undercover. Jamaica’s thriving marijuana business was almost ruined in 1975, so drug dealers, including Gerdes and Charles “Muscles” Foster, smuggled marijuana and cocaine into Florida from Colombia on boats. One night, while offloading marijuana, Ronnie Ray witnessed Steinhorst execute four innocent persons who visited the beach close to their activity. The victims were reported missing by their families, but at the time, no one knew this case was connected to the smuggling operation. Special Agent Boff, his partner Hatch, and their team wanted to find the persons who controlled the smuggling ring, particularly a person known only as “The Old Man” who provided financing for the operation.

“Loyalty begets respect, respect begets loyalty.” I was amazed at how crafty the smugglers were in their efforts to protect themselves and in finding storage facilities in certain states for the distribution of large quantities of marijuana and cocaine. King Rex and the Cowboy Mafia is a fascinating true crime novel that will give readers a good idea of organized crime and how Special Agent Fred Boff and other law enforcement agents sacrificed their personal and family time to end the illegal drug trade. A few names are fictitious to protect their identities, but there are photos and personal pieces of information about members of the Cowboy Mafia. Fred Boff and his co-authors, Phil and Sandy Hamman's book, King Rex and the Cowboy Mafia, is well written and interesting.
