On a dark and stormy night, a baby was abandoned at a monastery. Well, maybe not so dark and stormy, but Kellie WAS left on the doorstep of monks as a baby and has stayed with them ever since. Flash forward and Kellie is a young girl. She's loved her life with the monks and has gotten more than a conventional knowledge of all aspects of life, particularly Kung Fu. She is very happy, but all of a sudden she is expected to just drop everything and start a new life in America with Master Chen. She tries her best to make friends and figure out the new country, but when secrets are unearthed that throw her world into a tailspin, she doesn't know who she can trust. Kung Fu Kellie and the Legend of Anguo by A.H. Shinn is a fun and intelligent ride that kids from middle grade all the way to adults will enjoy.
I absolutely love reading books that are set in other countries and with other cultures. I enjoyed the first parts of the book and when she went back home to save her family, but also enjoyed when Kellie moved to America and how the culture shock felt when seeing it first hand. I feel that fans of comic books will love how A.H. Shinn writes, in an almost campy and comic book manner with the characters while still maintaining the formatting and story depth of an actual novel. Kung Fu Kellie is a great book!
