From page one, Last Chance Lane gets your blood pumping and your mind running in circles. Jennifer R. Kim leaves you questioning everything. What is reality? Do we exist in the protagonist’s mind? The story is told from a first-person viewpoint leaving you enmeshed in the main character’s mind as she struggles to make sense of her journey. As she meets more people, she reaches within herself to find answers that are slower in coming than she would like. From train wrecks to car accidents and physical assaults, the character is catapulted from one high-stress situation to another, with the comfort of new connections (or are they?) with kind-hearted people in between. Finding comfort in the solace of “Granny” and meeting a woman with a physical disability that in no way takes from her giving spirit, the main character is racing through a journey of self-discovery that will leave you second-guessing her reality till the last pages.

Jennifer R. Kim displays a fast-paced writing style that pulled me into Last Chance Lane from the beginning, leaving me hungry for more information. I found myself unable to step away from the story for long, never sure what our young woman would encounter next. Though the characters remain rather vague throughout the story (deliberately so, to maintain the air of mystery the entire novella embodies), leaving little room for depth in each of them, Kim somehow managed to make me feel connected, despite the uncertainty that enveloped me till the big reveal at the end. I really enjoyed reading this story.
