A grandmother meets a six-year-old boy named Jack at a bus stop as he returns from school. She promises that she will be waiting for him there tomorrow, too. Yet, unexpectedly, something changes, and the bus arrives without the boy one day. Will Bennett gets a letter with a familiar name on the envelope. He assumes it concerns a wind farm project that his grandfather, Miles, works on. The Bennett family is not an ordinary one, for they are gifted with exceptional abilities. Will they find out how the missing boy is connected to Miles Bennett's rival, Jason Anders, who sends him letters one after another? Fans of short stories and fantasy fiction will appreciate Last Day at Sharp Park by David R. Beshears.
Last Day at Sharp Park by David R. Beshears is an intriguing fantasy novella. David has a simple and appealing writing style. The author's laconic, plain language prompts us to fill in the blanks as they hint at the Bennetts' carefully guarded family secrets, teasing our imaginations. The dialogue is masterfully written and helps us see the complex characters from many different angles. I especially appreciated such meticulously crafted female characters as Ellinor and Alice. The gripping narrative has a well-balanced pace. It is slow at times, thus adding psychological depth to the story. The author creates a riveting mystery and invites us to explore a multilayered world. A surprising twist at the end of this captivating novella makes us want more from this talented writer.
