Lay Me Down (A Kellam High Novel) by Tamara Hart Heiner tells the story of a teenager trapped in a life of poverty and abuse. Forced into home schooling by her controlling stepfather and emotionally absent mother, Kylee is isolated from her old friends, who don't even seem to notice her existence anymore. She longs for friendship and acceptance, so she is quick to take advantage of the opportunity to make a new friend when Price moves in next door. At first, he seems disgusted by her, probably due to the negative comments he's heard about her family at school. Little does Kylee know that developing a relationship with Price will lead to the discovery of more about herself than she is ready to face.
With its bold approach to sensitive topics such as domestic abuse, self-harm, and the death of a loved one, Lay Me Down is an emotional journey from start to finish. With innocent romance, action, and suspense, there is never a dull moment. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried during the conclusion. Tamara Hart Heiner introduces us to amazingly realistic characters in a setting that is easy to imagine and relate to. With an unexpected twist, a few supernatural elements are woven into the story in such a smooth manner that it is easy to imagine that this is a real story. I love it when the lines between fact and fiction are blurred, and this is a classic example of a story that succeeds in doing so.
