Leading Without Shrinking by Dr. Jessica Saulsberry is a well-written book that discusses a common challenge most leaders, business professionals, and executives struggle with: a pattern of shrinking themselves and gradually moving away from who they are. These patterns occur in three forms, which include holding back, carrying everything, and waiting for permission. In four parts, Jessica uses her story and experiences to help leaders recognize when they shrink, the factors responsible for it, and how they can sustain changes without feeling small. In the first part of this book, she explores the concept of shrinking as a pattern with consequences rather than a reasonable professional adjustment. In other parts, she discusses why these patterns form and the practices for reclaiming who you are, among others.
Most times, leaders are mostly considered superheroes without any internal struggles; however, this book opened my eyes to some of their struggles, which I found to be relatable. This book taught me that beyond how I think I am being perceived, it is important to trust my leadership, stick to awareness rather than erosion, and find positive ways to handle feedback. I commend Jessica for her honesty and the courage to share from personal experiences as a leader. I loved the quotes as they were inspiring. The writing is straightforward, organized, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. Some of the themes covered are leadership, self-awareness, personal and professional growth, empowerment, and others. I recommend Leading Without Shrinking by Dr. Jessica Saulsberry to anyone in a leadership role, HR managers, and aspiring leaders.
