If you'd like a good afternoon's read while trying to relax, you might enjoy Let's Ride! by Rick Garcia. It is partly a memoir and partly a common sense/motivational book which will appeal to many who have had to make their way through tough times in their lives. Garcia starts out with his childhood memories in small town Nebraska, where he learned a solid work ethic and a sense of responsibility from a father who left school in the elementary years and a mother with solid German roots. The chapters are entertaining and they speak to ordinary people who may get stuck in life. The chapter "Stuck on Stupid" is one which will strike a chord with almost anyone willing to admit to having moments of brain blips. I also enjoyed the WTF chapter in which Garcia explains how we all have those moments in which we are overtaken by a sense of surprise and bewilderment by the words and actions of others.
Let's Ride! is a book that appeals to the trials and tribulations of our very humaneness. Garcia permeates the book with ongoing quotes which emphasize concisely what he illustrates about his own life. This is not an "I told you so" kind of book; rather it's one which you might keep on the shelf and refer to when confused and/or frustrated. Its guidance is not professional; it is a product of having lived the kind of life in which one makes lemonade when handed lemons. Even if you don't agree with the author's opinions, it's a fun book to read. Even readers who disagree with the author's conclusions will probably be content to simply disagree because it's all in good fun.
