In Liam's Big Surprise by Dawn Renee Young, Liam speaks to his mom and dad about a surprise they want to share with him. Liam asks a lot of questions and makes several guesses until he learns the secret. At first, he's disappointed with the news, but as he warms up to the idea he makes an assumption, and another surprise tumbles out. Negative feelings threaten to overcome him again, but Liam adopts a more positive attitude. Once he becomes accustomed to the idea, Liam tries to help, but it seems like the surprise is taking forever to arrive. Finally, the surprise is in his home and all the waiting is over. To reinforce the love she hopes to communicate, the author places a heart on almost every page for children to locate as they read.
Dawn Renee Young tackles a subject that may be hard for some children. A "surprise" is something thrilling, but for Liam, it introduces extra feelings. Through the colorful pages, Liam works out his frustrations so that when the surprise arrives, he is more than ready to embrace it. Young's book captures a time in a family that can be exciting and unsure; however, through her work, she shows love, acceptance, and happiness. My children raced to find the hearts on the pages, excited by the challenge of locating the harder-to-find ones. Liam's Big Surprise is a great book to cuddle up with your children and share during story time. It opens the door for potentially life-changing, heart-warming conversations and deeper family connections.
