Lies, Spies, and the Baker’s Surprise (A Seaside Cove Bed and Breakfast Mystery Book 6) is a delightful and engaging mystery novel by Terry Ambrose which forms a part of a series. In this installment, we see the guest house and its regulars abuzz with excitement about the forthcoming marriage of owner Rick Atwood to his fiancee Marquetta Weiss. But when Rick’s daughter Alex snoops on a guest and reveals him to be an adulterer, his subsequent murder begins an adventure that leads Rick and Alex down a dangerous path that could see an innocent woman convicted and Alex’s life at risk from a dangerous new face in town.
I adored the dynamic between Rick and his young daughter, a budding sleuth who wishes to be just like her father as he consults with the police on the murder investigation. Their relationship quickly forms the heart of the narrative, and Terry Ambrose’s depiction of their bond is delightful as it describes the sometimes prickly but always affectionate minefield of being a single father to a pre-teen girl. The mystery around which the story revolves is an interesting and well-considered one, with the perfect balance of intriguing leads versus convincing red herrings to keep readers hooked on the investigation right until the end. Whilst Lies, Spies, and the Baker’s Surprise features several recurring characters from the wider series, I should stress to potential readers that it can be read as a stand-alone. A fun and engaging mystery with two sleuths who are depicted with warmth and affection, this is an essential read for anyone seeking their next cozy murder mystery experience.
