Lieutenant Norman by Goutham Kool Monk tells the story of a heroic military dog named Norman, whose life is forged on the battlefield beside his handler, Sergeant Harris. Sadly, Norman sustains a critical leg injury and a life-shattering loss, which results in an early retirement from military life. Sapphire, a caring and tenacious widow, and her son, Joe, adopt Norman and introduce him to a peaceful suburban life. Nevertheless, Norman is still haunted by the memories of his military days. He manages to mentor a group of quirky pets who form a resourceful team called the Pet Squad. Even after Norman and his team thwart a household break-in, Joe is later abducted by a villainous ex-colonel with a hidden agenda against the K9 program. Can Norman and his resilient team foil the plans of this ruthless miscreant once and for all?
Goutham Kool Monk's Lieutenant Norman is a heartfelt adventure story about honor and courage. The author aptly explores themes of grief and the healing power of love in the lives of both humans and animals. Norman shows readers what it means to truly fight against trauma (inner pain) and a leg injury (outer pain), yet overcome both with time, patience, and loving care. The book offers a fresh take on war stories through the eyes of a valiant combat dog, making Norman's tale truly emotional and inspiring. It shows the importance of support and genuine friendship when confronting issues like loss and trauma. Overall, I admire the way the author reveals how military life affects combat animals, the families of each soldier, and an entire community, not just the soldiers themselves. If you're familiar with other books like Damien Lewis' War Dog and Michael Morpurgo's War Horse, you'll enjoy this story too.
