Corie Adjmi's Life and Other Shortcomings is a slice of life literary work full of lessons that need to be shared today. Juxtaposing the present with the past, the book reveals a web of interconnected stories meant to relate to women's everyday lives. Or more specifically, their struggles. These stories are so honest and relatable, it hurts. They will engage readers to demand and work for something better, not only for women but for everyone. This work of fiction is a testament that there's already been progress in the fight for equality, but it's far from over; there's still a long way to go. Kudos to Adjmi for addressing a wide range of topics that are difficult but essential to talk about.

Life and Other Shortcomings, while consistent with its intellectual tone, also gives way to a lot of intrigue so that it's hard to put the book down. Given the book's slice of life nature, the stories Adjmi chooses to tell are arbitrary and do not follow a chronological order. Because of this organic story-telling, the chapters are both surprising and a little confusing. They only offer a peek into someone's life but never provide closure. The plot's structure, or lack thereof, somehow dilutes the book's compelling message. Overall, Life and Other Shortcomings is still worth the read.
