Life Is Terminal: And So Is This Cold Sore is a collection of Micheline Brewer’s thoughts and experiences, most of which are humorous. “Marriage: Reproposed” highlights the five stages of marriage, accompanied by a tagline for each stage, ranging from the bliss of having the other person in your life to the appreciation and relief that you didn’t kill them at some point. “Money is the Color Green. And Red” ponders on how red and green lights—blinking from charging electrical and electronic appliances, like electric toothbrushes, VCR players, automatic coffee makers, and laptops—indicate wealth that would be considered extravagance by the standards of earlier days. I would like to add “white” to this list of glowing lights. “Cancer, Southern Style” is a satirical poem warning off “Can Sir.” “Dear Pet Psychopath Psychiatrist” follows an amusing conversation between a dog owner and a pet psychologist, both fed up with their jobs.
Life Is Terminal: And So Is This Cold Sore by Micheline Brewer is a literary work that explores the three major forms of literature—prose, drama, and poetry—as well as literary devices like sarcasm, satire, and humor. The pieces are based on different topics, with humor as the central theme. I have to confess that I appreciated and laughed at most pieces better after a second read. The pieces also address social issues, including marriage, aging, public toilets, dogs, etc. Justice would be better done if I could analyze each piece independently, but I can’t for want of space. I enjoyed some pieces more than others, but I appreciated this book as a whole. If you enjoy subtle humor and entertaining literary pieces, this book is up your alley.
