Life Skills: A Handbook for Parents & Teachers of the Intellectually Disabled by Shari Pierce is one of those books you wish you'd found sooner if you're working with or raising someone with developmental needs. Pierce spent decades in the classroom, and you can really tell—she isn't just giving you theories, she's giving you a guide that's useful and full of heart. She covers everything from the basics of home-school communication to the high-stress moments of handling tantrums and safety concerns. The book is cleverly divided into sections that will appeal to both teachers and parents, making it a versatile tool for creating a consistent environment for a child. The author has a gift for taking really big, stressful topics and turning them into simple "I can do this" steps, all while keeping a sense of humor and a ton of heart.

I honestly can't recommend Life Skills highly enough. I am so incredibly impressed with this handbook! Shari Pierce's heart for her students and their families really shines through on every page. As a mom who navigates these waters every day, it was so refreshing to read something that felt like it was written by someone who has actually "been there." Pierce doesn't just talk about theories; she talks about the real stuff—like kitchen safety, chores, and the vital importance of giving a child time to process information. The "Wait for It" section was a huge standout for me because it's such a simple but life-changing concept. As a parent, I found the advice to be so grounded and helpful—especially the sections on "Breaking Eggs vs. Breaking Egos." The writing is punchy, authentic, and incredibly supportive. It really feels like having a seasoned mentor sitting right there with you, giving you the confidence to handle the tough days. This is a must-read resource that I know I'll be referring to for a long time. It is rare to find a professional resource that feels this personal and authentic.
