Lightshed is the second novel in The Gateway Trilogy by Crystal D. Grant. The story of Mason Grey continues now that he is empowered by the Shadowstone and troubled with the title of Shadowman. Driven by vengeance for his brother’s death, Mason is locked in conflict with the Steward Army and the prince he intends to kill. Yet his loyalty wavers as his feelings grow for Seria Gayle, who was once an enemy. However, his attraction to her begins to change everything he ever thought. Seria is convinced that Mason still has goodness in him, and she is willing to risk her life and her loyalty by trying to bring him to the truth. Her journey takes her across realms and straight into enemy territory, as Emperor Jader targets the Gateway itself. With battles mounting and Mason’s Reader abilities getting out of control, both he and Seria face impossible choices that will redefine their futures and the fate of their worlds.
Author Crystal D. Grant created a perfect world with incredibly human characters. Although I have not read the first novel in the series, I had no issue connecting with Seria and Mason. I was rooting for them from the very beginning. Mason’s struggle with his urge to find vengeance and his love for Seria made him real and relatable. Seria’s character arc is incredible. I loved how she truly believed Mason could escape the darkness inside him and be free of the burden. The worldbuilding is fantastic, and the descriptions make sure you feel like you are part of Seria and Mason’s journey. The pace is perfect, the character development is on point, and the elements of fantasy make the story even more entertaining. I loved it and will read the first novel in the series as I wait for the next one to be released.
