LilliMae's Safari Hat, written by Peni Clark and illustrated by Zoe Saunders, is quite an adventure story. A high-energy and fun-loving LilliMae has a genuine affection for her hat. It is purple and soft and even cuddly. It is like having a best friend who can go with her to any place or on any outing at a moment’s notice. Plus, she gives it so many different names. So, when she decides to go on a safari, naturally, it becomes her safari hat. Right from the start, riding in an open vehicle and being able to see so many wonderful animals in their natural habitat, LilliMae and her hat are in for quite a wild ride.
One of the best parts of this story is the way children are introduced to the babies of the “Big Five” of Africa’s most famous safari animals. While LilliMae looks on, with an unusual kind of help, her hat has its own up-close and personal encounters with these animals. The drawings by Zoe Saunders create such a realistic atmosphere. I especially like the large pictures that focus on one animal at a time. I think a coloring book companion would be great, so kids could match their own coloring to those in the book. LilliMae and her hat do have their lessons to learn on this adventure, and I invite readers to discover those lessons for themselves while enjoying all this story has to offer.
