Living in Colour by Simone Hewitt is a heartfelt memoir that explores the theme of Black sisterhood while following the author on her journey of self-discovery. From a young age, Hewitt struggled to understand the prejudice her grandmother faced for being a woman of mixed heritage. As she got older, however, she began to notice cracks within the concept of Black sisterhood, experiencing bullying from her peers for her hair and physical features. This bullying led to trauma that deepened when she was betrayed by women she believed to be her friends. Heartbroken, she distanced herself from her Jamaican roots and went through a rebellious phase. However, after facing a significant loss, she found the strength to return to her true self, embracing her culture and individuality while discovering the true meaning of sisterhood.

Living in Colour is a powerful narrative about self-discovery, resilience, and the complex realities of Black sisterhood. Through evocative storytelling rooted in Jamaican heritage and personal experiences, the book tackles themes of internalized racism, colorism, betrayal, healing, and the transformative power of authentic connections. Simone Hewitt highlights the importance of self-awareness, establishing boundaries, and showing vulnerability in forming genuine relationships. She acknowledges that growth and forgiveness are ongoing journeys. Her path from pain to empowerment illustrates that true sisterhood is grounded in embracing one’s multifaceted identity and building communities based on trust, support, and authenticity. Her story is engaging with ups and downs that many will find relatable. I admire how she did not give up but remained hopeful in her healing and search for genuine connections. Despite the envy, jealousy, and self-hate, the author also found unity, generosity, and true friendship in Black sisterhoods. Overall, this is a painful yet beautiful narrative, and I highly recommend reading this book to appreciate the valuable life lessons it offers.
