Author Biography

Hi, I'm Tamara.

Thank you, dear reader, for caring for children and their mental and emotional well-being.

As a teacher, I saw lockdown drills as a huge stress (for students and staff!) and they didn't make us feel any safer. That had to change.

I wrote the book Lockdown Drill at Superhero School so that kids would want to practice their "superhero skills", and most importantly, they'd be informed (and empowered!) about the what, why, and how of a lockdown drill.

Lockdown Drill at Superhero School is a valuable support for teachers, counselors, and school resource officers to calmly prepare their students for a shelter-in-place drill. I used engaging dialogue and worked with an amazing illustrator to bring Miss Sabio's class of Superheroes-in-training to life in a fun and non-threatening way.

Please check it out and share my book with your school administrator.

All the best,

Tamara

If you are a parent (or like me, a proud aunt!), one of the hardest tasks is understanding how to talk to your child about challenging events or news. You want to protect your child or loved one from any harm, but you also want them to be prepared in the case of an emergency event. In Lockdown Drill At Superhero School, author Tamara Rittershaus tackles this issue in a child-friendly, understandable way. The story takes place in Miss Sabio's classroom, as she teaches the Superheroes-In-Training what a lockdown drill is, and how to protect themselves against supervillains, dragons, and anything else that might threaten their safety. Each page is brilliantly illustrated by Adam Walker-Parker, with bright colors keeping the audience engaged with the story. Not only does this book provide crucial advice on what to do in the case of a lockdown (such as locking the door, remaining quiet, etc.) but it is presented in a friendly and digestible way for kids to understand.

Lockdown Drill At Superhero School by Tamara Rittershaus does a wonderful job of addressing a heavy subject matter while giving children the information they need to stay safe in times of an emergency. What I loved about the book was the inclusivity of the images which reflected the diversity of today's classrooms. Additionally, for further learning, the author also has a copy of the book available in Spanish and further activity worksheets for teachers to use in their classrooms. I think this is a wonderful tool for teaching kids about lockdowns in a friendly way. As the book says, "Superheroes are always prepared!" This book is a great way to make sure your Superhero-In-Training is prepared in an empowering way.
