Losing Weight Is a Healing Journey by Katrina Love Senn is a diet book with a difference. In fact she advises against “diets.” Its subtitle is A Woman's Guide to Losing Weight Naturally, and that is exactly what she advises. Much of the book is about loving oneself and making responsible, sensible, logical choices. Furthermore, it involves healing oneself emotionally to eliminate emotional eating. Senn herself has lost 60 pounds and kept it off for years at the time of writing this. She now coaches women in this type of a weight loss plan, a “holistic, honoring, and healing approach to weight loss that recognizes the inherent beauty, wisdom, and natural power that is already lying dormant within you.”
What's different in Losing Weight Is a Healing Journey is the encouragement to enjoy food freedom and eat freely of natural whole foods. Some foods heal and some foods harm your body, causing physical and even emotional effects. Eating should be conscious, empowering, and intentional. Try eating in silence and being mindful of tastes, smells, and your feeling of fullness. This aids you in knowing how much you eat when you are not being mindful, as we tend to do when watching a movie, in front of the television, while driving, or during the workday. Going to bed on an empty stomach lets the body focus on healing and digestion, and to sleep more deeply. A food diary will help us to be more mindful of what we are consuming.
Katrina Love Senn relates a before and after eating diary, such as ‘I used to eat pancakes for breakfast, now I eat lemon water in the morning, then fruit and whole grain cereal later. Fish and vegetables for lunch, rather than pastries, chips, or fast food.’ This book is a breakthrough for weight loss. All in all, I believe this is a reasonable weight loss plan for those who are discouraged by weight stagnation.
