Magnus and the Last Dragon by Jeremy Scholz is an exciting fantasy adventure that follows a fourteen-year-old embarking on an amazing journey. Magnus has always felt like he was looking at life from the outside. He’s too big to be invisible, yet no one ever seems to notice him, except his one loyal friend who never fails to see him. He finally has an answer to why he feels like an extra piece that doesn’t quite fit in the world. At least not in this world. One day, something changes: he starts seeing things that no one else does. First, it’s little things. Maybe a shadow that seems just out of place, or a whisper that isn’t quite there. But then one day, he meets a man by the bike racks who claims to be a gnome, and no one else seems to notice him. That’s when Magnus suspects there’s more going on. Now he’s pulled into a magical world where he’s being sought after by a secret organization, and he’s taken his friend Mallory along for the ride.
The world created by Jeremy Scholz gives the story a magical backdrop that weaves in wonder and danger throughout Magnus’ journey. You discover other creatures, from trolls to centaurs, and a world that has a rich history. Once you meet a gnome, it’s hard to go back to normal, but in Magnus’ case, that’s the last thing he wants. While there is danger in this magical world, such as the Order that is hunting him, there’s also the incredible excitement that he feels. The world may come with danger, but it also comes with discovering his origins. Plus, he discovers all this with the help of his friend Mallory, who offers him ‘normalcy’ when he needs it most. Their sweet dynamic grounds the story in friendship and discovery, and she keeps him from carrying everything alone. Magnus and the Last Dragon is a great read for middle graders and older readers, with a coming-of-age journey that has action, wonder, and self-discovery. Plus, who doesn’t love dragons?
