Love When the War is Edging Closer by Nicoletta Glod centers on Bogdan, a Romanian Liaison officer; Anishka, Ukraine’s Under Secretary for Logistics and Support; and Bin, a young Australian diplomat. Bogdan covertly investigates Anishka concerning some mysterious jewelry that came into her possession. He goes so far as to recruit Olga, his aunt's friend, to get closer to Anishka secretly. Meanwhile, Anishka is part of another investigation surrounding missing military transports driven from Romania to Ukraine. Her mixed Russian-Ukrainian background and knowledge about the transport details make her a likely suspect. Bogdan's, Bin's, and Anishka's paths intersect with a police investigation--led by Major Tomescu--regarding the murder of Marian Petrescu, a man with a falsified identity. Marian's transport company is involved in some shady and dangerous business regarding military transports. Can Bogdan, Bin, Anishka, and Tomescu uncover the truth in time?
Nicoletta Glod's Love When the War is Edging Closer is an energetic and fast-paced story that accentuates themes like unparalleled bravery, espionage, romance, conspiracy, political intrigue, and corruption. It shows a tapestry of events that will seize the attention of readers and relentlessly draw them in with the need to know more about the characters and their motives. The plot unfolds through a series of insightful chapters surrounding the parallel journeys. These three main characters are complex, well-described, and fully realized. Each of them adds an intriguing story arc to the narrative. There is even a poignant romance blossoming in the narrative. Bin and Anishka's love is a beautiful dynamic, though not the immediate focus of the storyline. Their relationship and evocative romantic scenes add hue and vulnerability to this action-packed James Bond-styled novel. If you are a fan of movies like Mission: Impossible and The Bourne Identity, this novel will meet your reading expectations.
