Lucy is a black poodle living a good life, free of strife and full of fun. The only thing she wanted but lacked was a sibling, but this was not to be for long. Lucy’s parents soon adopted an excitable Golden Retriever pup named Pearl, who jumped straight into playing. Just as they started playing, Lucy got scared of Pearl. Pearl’s paws came too near when she jumped, and she wouldn’t leave Lucy’s side, so Lucy took to hiding in the bushes, but of course, Pearl found her. Lucy’s friend, a little squirrel, intervened at that point, presenting a great plan for keeping Pearl active. Lucy would bark up at the sky, alerting all the nearby animals, who would vie for Pearl’s attention from a safe distance. This plan worked perfectly, keeping Pearl busy and Lucy free, until one day, it didn’t. Lucy’s Little Sister by Dolores Frazer is a story about a big sister who has her hands full.
Lucy’s Little Sister by Dolores Frazer is a simple but tastefully presented story, with beautiful watercolor paintings by Jim Lagasse and impressive rhyming. The story also offers a few positive lessons on friendship, including consideration, understanding differences, and teamwork. It is quite a thoughtful story. I liked that the vocabulary is simple but contains words that will challenge and improve the intended audience’s vocabulary. I especially liked the end rhymes used in this narrative; it was fun to read aloud. I enjoyed Lucy’s Little Sister and recommend it to young readers, especially those who love stories about animals.
