Mage Breaker: Eight Bullets by Sean R. Frazier is an urban fantasy novel set in the city of Karnascus, where Ellyne returns after a two-year absence to find magic malfunctioning and an alien race enslaving humans and the Kithrak. With civilization in ruins, Ellyne leads a rebellion to reclaim control from the oppressors and end the city's dependence on magic. As she forges alliances and faces old enemies, she must weigh the heavy costs of the war she wages and determine if the potential victory justifies the inevitable losses. Frazier offers readers a truly immersive world where magic and alien technology collide in a brilliant and credible balance of fantasy and science fiction. Stepping into this world feels more than cinematic, as the descriptive work takes readers deep into a multisensory experience of errant magic and tyrannical oppression that has them looking over their shoulders in paranoia from the start.
The emotional complexity of Ellyne's character, caught between loyalty and sacrifice in this wild landscape of fearmongering and control, offers a vast and deeply involved drama with many complex consequences that are explored naturally through dialogue and action. Ellyne is constantly considering her options, but the narrative keeps this choice fresh and varied in the pacing and outcomes so the story never becomes dry or stunted. Sean R. Frazier’s detailed world-building is at its most impressive in the malfunctioning magic system that Ellyne seeks to end dependency on, and the author’s exploration of themes like addiction to power and the cost of rebellion is skillfully woven into an action-packed plot. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Mage Breaker: Eight Bullets for fans of urban fantasy seeking to discover an accomplished author with great imagination and immersive writing skills.
