In Mama Opossum’s Misadventures (Awesome Opossum Stories), Gina Gallois tells the tale of an opossum who loses her ten joeys. She sets out to find them, meeting other nocturnal creatures as she searches for her offspring. Some of the animals are not friendly, so Mama Opossum must hurry to locate them. The book concludes with a new adventure awaiting Mama Opossum and her joeys.
I read Mama Opossum’s Misadventures (Awesome Opossum Stories) with my young children who are all under the age of ten. We enjoyed the story as we located a missing joey on each page and learned facts about opossums and other animals. Almost all the animals were helpful, promoting a theme of friendship throughout the book. The book also encourages perseverance, as even though the author reveals that opossums are solitary creatures that would not normally go after their missing young, Mama Opossum does not give up until she locates all ten of her joeys.
Readers will learn facts about opossums and tidbits about other nocturnal creatures, as the joeys explore the places where they land. Gina Gallois creates an interactive experience that involves readers in the story on every page. The colors are indicative of the night and early morning as Mama Opossum spends the night searching for her joeys. The opossum facts at the end of the book provide seeds of knowledge that can grow a child’s interest in opossums. I’d recommend the story for children up to ten years, as the book was educational, and my children enjoyed it.
