Tension rises and the stakes get higher in Christine Jones's latest installment of the Mariard story. In Mariard Volume 2: Glass Pawns, Nathanial, Tegan, Cathmore, and Rebecca are thrust back into the game board for a second round against the Necropolin. With new players, different and more potent powers, and outside forces, it is all Nathanial can do to keep his family and friends alive, let alone connected. Is this a test of strength and intellect against an opponent, or is it a test of loyalty and trust among friends? Jones strips back the layers of friendship, love, and family in this continuation of the Mariard games. Eventually, you will be left wondering whether you can even trust yourself. Can anybody win the game?
Mariard: Glass Pawns took me on a mental and emotional ride. Christine Jones weaved the story so skillfully that I couldn’t tell the truth from the lies. I felt for every character as they all struggled with what they thought to be true, just to have to turn around and question everything all over again. Nobody was safe in this story. I spent most of my time reading on the edge of my seat, not knowing what was going to come next. The author was creative with the setting of this chessboard, and I was not disappointed. Incorporating all four elements as different sections of the game, each with its challenges, was entertaining and unusual. If you enjoyed Mariard: The Gifting, you will enjoy Glass Pawns equally if not more. Overall, I really had fun reading this book. I found myself starting to notice my favorite characters. I can't wait to read more from this author.
