Maya's Money Mission: Saving Green and the Planet by Areeb Hirani is an educational children’s story about environmental conservation and budgeting. One day, Maya notices that her school cafeteria bin is overflowing with food and other waste. Disheartened by the thought of it ending up in a landfill, she asks her teacher whether there is a way to convert old food into something useful. Ms. Sprout teaches her and her classmates about a compost bin, which transforms food waste into nourishing soil. Inspired, Maya rushes home and asks her parents if she can buy one for school. They tell her that she will have to save up, so Maya suggests running a lemonade stand to raise money for the compost bin. She draws up a budget with her dad and calculates that she will need $40 to purchase the necessary materials for the stand. Will Maya raise enough money to buy a compost bin?
Areeb Hirani cleverly employs Maya as a tool to teach children basic financial literacy and the importance of environmental awareness. The writing style and story are easy to follow. Young readers will learn about budgeting, saving, and selling, as well as concepts such as making a profit and breaking even. The bright illustrations include little notes that effectively highlight these key terms, reinforcing remembrance. Additionally, a glossary at the end provides a summary of them. Overall, Maya's Money Mission: Saving Green and the Planet would be a valuable addition to any child’s library, as it is accessible, informative, and interesting.
