Metatalta: Daggered Wings by David E. Kinney is an epic military science fiction novel set in a galaxy ruled by the mighty Jakarien Empire. The story follows Sam, a human raised by a Jakarien prince, who hides a secret that could alter the course of history. As he endures the brutal training of the Star Corps and battles ancient forces, Sam’s destiny is tied to a forgotten civilization. With a blend of fast-paced action, deep world-building, and a looming threat of ancient evil, this novel captivates fans of classic sci-fi adventures. Kinney delivers a fantastic sci-fi adventure with a lot of sharp edges that keep the realism level high, and therefore the stakes of the plot even higher.
This richly detailed universe is filled with cohesive inner logic and plenty of well-developed concepts, immersing readers in a fully realized sci-fi world where it’s clear that every place, attitude, way of life, and social structure has been worked on from every angle. This certainly informs the characterization of Sam’s complex journey as a human raised among the Jakariens, as we see this strange world unfold through his eyes in a thrilling and relatable way. David E. Kinney’s ability to weave tension and suspense into every chapter keeps the reader engaged and eager for more twists and turns as the plot develops, and the more we get to know the Empire, the more potential for danger and darkness there is at every turn. The underlying themes of destiny and hidden power have a strong, credible pull, and the investment we make in Sam after seeing him rise to so many challenges really pays off in the satisfying conclusion. Overall, I would certainly recommend Metatalta: Daggered Wings to fans of epic sci-fi that is solidly conceived and extremely well-penned.
