Mia Amata by Kellie Mickelsen delivers a taut, emotional suspense story about reinvention, love, and the dark shadows of the past. Megan Davis, trapped in an abusive marriage, seizes a rare chance to escape and create a new life as Mattie, finding unexpected joy and true love with Jacob. But just when happiness seems within reach, the past Megan thought she'd buried claws its way back, threatening to unravel everything. Mickelsen crafts a tense, heartfelt narrative about resilience, healing, and the high price of freedom.
Author Kellie Mickelsen's novel is filled with raw emotional clarity that pulls her readers deep into Mattie's journey. The reinvention concept is a brilliant plot device for setting up many twists and potential dangers, and this is paired with clever pacing to ensure that tension simmers beneath every page, keeping readers invested until the final reveal. The dialogue was also a standout for me as it effortlessly serves so many purposes whilst still being engaging and readable. There was a real sense of sitting on Mattie/Megan’s shoulder and understanding every emotion she’s going through between the lines, but the conversations also move the plot forward and bring new dangers into play in a direct but natural way. There’s also a brilliant discussion of the wider themes of the novel simmering just beneath the surface, with every interaction building up a compelling portrait of survival and second chances among the realistic characters. Overall, I would certainly recommend Mia Amata as a brilliant read that’s perfect for fans of tension-fuelled stories about identity, love, and reclaiming one’s life.
