Mirabelle and the Sea Green Bathtub: Journey to the Coral Reef by Suzanne Elizabeth Murphy is an imaginative story about a young girl who loves the water, particularly the ocean. Mirabelle fancies herself as a mermaid but doesn’t live near the sea. She spends a lot of time floating in her bathtub. It’s no regular bathtub. This bathtub has a magical history. One day, Mirabelle is visited by a seahorse who takes her beneath the bathtub to a world of coral and marine life to show her the beauty and wonder of his world. The seahorse wants to teach Mirabelle about the dangers that threaten it. When Mirabelle returns to her world, she helps her mother remember adventures she experienced in the world beneath the bathtub.
Environmental awareness is explored as the main theme in Mirabelle and the Sea Green Bathtub. The emphasis is on the relationship between humans and the sea, suggesting concepts like ecosystems and climate change. Set up in chapter format, the story flows through Mirabelle’s underwater experiences, subtly highlighting the negative effects suffered by coral, a living creature, under the sea. The font enhances the words and sentences visually. Illustrations by Suzanne Elizabeth Murphy accompany every page of the narrative, stimulating the imagination and conveying the essence of the story. When the story ends, there is a section with additional information about coral, how to help save them, and a glossary to enhance youngsters' understanding of the coral and marine life mentioned. Lighthearted and educational, this story is wonderful for early readers.
