What do you do when your much-loved son is stuck in a rut filled with exactly the wrong type of women and you’re desperate to see him get out there and start living again? You make a deal, of course! A hilarious, outrageous and truly fun deal that involves you placing a personal ad to get out of your own rut. As Henry’s heart-to-heart with his son spirals into a conversation about his own life, Beate Boeker does a great job of showing how a father and son come back to life after the death of their wife and mother. Mischief in Italy is the perfect title because it is filled with mischief, and lies and secrets, and a beautiful house at Lake Garda. Henry wants to avoid a gold-digger and Josh seems intent on only going after gold-diggers. Nevertheless, they make a deal and hilarity ensues.
Mischief in Italy is told from the point of view of several different characters — some important and some not so important — which produces a truly great and well-rounded story. Not only do you get to know plenty of different characters, but you pick up little tidbits that make the story even funnier as it progresses. Beate Boeker has written a hilarious story of love, miscommunication, and secrets. Plus, you can’t really go wrong with a companionship ad that begins with “old geezer with no hair on his head but plenty on his back,” especially when the old geezer gets more than one reply! The story, above all else, is tremendously witty with a lot of action but it isn’t fast-paced. In fact, it feels like a relaxing boat ride on Lake Garda.
