Miss B Goes to Space by Lane Bagby and Meredith Bagby is based on the true story of little squirrel monkey, Miss Baker, who was sent into space by NASA in 1959. Her journey was to ascertain whether humans could safely make similar trips. From the forests of Peru to a Miami pet shop and from there to a space lab, Miss Baker is renamed Miss B and prepared for a special mission. After lots of training and preparations, Miss B, along with another monkey, Miss Able, are launched inside the rocket for this important mission.
I love the combination of story and factual information in Miss B Goes to Space. It’s the perfect way to help young readers or listeners engage with history and scientific breakthroughs. Right from the start of the story, I was emotionally drawn into the little monkey’s fate and adventures. The additional and important theme of courage and making a difference in the world, no matter who we are or how small we might feel, is an important message for young children, too. The story arc is structured well and builds to the exciting and nerve-racking moment when the rocket launches. The bright and attractive illustrations depict the characters and plot perfectly. One of my favorites is the illustration of Miss B and Miss Able sharing cookies. Lane Bagby and Meredith Bagby’s book would be a great asset to any child’s school or home library. Great for storytimes, school projects, and discussions.
