It’s the last few days of bear hunting season and Bear is really worried. He has laryngitis and he can’t roar to scare away the hunters. His friends, Duck, Deer, and Skunk, offer to help. After all, Bear had helped protect Duck during duck hunting season and Deer during deer hunting season. The trio used their creative talents to scare the hunters away, but when it came to the last day, there were three hunters and no more creative ideas. Bear was too big to hide anywhere; he was so scared he even shook the branches of the bush he tried to hide behind. Skunk came to the rescue. It was an awesome but smelly save the Bear event.

Zoe Michal’s picture book story, Mission Protect Bear, is an imaginative story about friendship and creativity. It’s a fun plot that will have young readers giggling at the animal antics. I particularly enjoyed the deer’s solution to scare away the hunters. The colorful illustrations help move the story along and the author shares many ideas of creative thinking patterns amongst the animal friends. The ideas should spark some creative thinking on the part of the young reader, too. The interesting part of this story is that the reader doesn’t know who the third friend is until the end of the story and then it’s literally a blast how this friend saves the day and saves his friend, Bear. A sweet charming story that will entertain and amuse young readers every time they read it.
