Mitten Discovers His Shadow by Deborah Carter Martin is a delightful picture book about a little barn kitten growing up and discovering the wonders of the world. When Mitten and his brothers and sisters are old enough, their mother takes them out into the farmyard. Mitten is eager to explore, and he loves the soft grass, the pretty butterflies, and flowers. But then he notices his shadow. It looks like a monster, and it’s attached to him! No matter what he does, he can’t get rid of it. His mother explains that it’s not a monster, but his shadow, which is made by the light. Even so, Mitten keeps trying to hide from it, and then he falls asleep, tired out. When he wakes, the sun has gone behind the clouds, and his shadow is gone! Now Mitten misses his shadow, and wants it back. When the sunlight comes back, so does his shadow. Mitten learns that it is really his friend.
Mitten Discovers His Shadow is guaranteed to become a favorite not only with its intended 2-5 age group, but all kids and indeed all readers who love cats, farm settings, barns, and gentle, healing stories. The illustrations, also by author Deborah Carter Martin, match the story perfectly. Readers will return again and again to the pictures of the wide-eyed kittens, the red barn, the farmyard, the proud mama cat, Mitten’s maneuvers to lose his shadow, and his peaceful naps. The words are carefully chosen to help children learning to read. Highly recommended.
