Mokey's New Friends by Connie Arnold is a heartwarming children's book about a young monkey named Mokey. Mokey lives in a zoo, and he loves playing and swinging from branch to branch. One day, after the monkeys are fed and Mokey has gobbled down his food, Mokey discovers that the door to his cage isn't fully shut. Mokey slips out. He leaves the zoo and sees sights that he hadn't seen before. Mokey climbs a tree and wants to play, but he doesn't see any other monkeys. Mokey meets a donkey named DeeDee. The two play and have lots of fun, but then it is night and DeeDee has to go. Then he meets a squirrel named Charlie, and they play together, but Charlie soon has to go too. Mokey has had lots of fun, and wants to tell his monkey friends at the zoo about his adventures. Will Mokey ever find his way back to the zoo?

I really enjoyed reading Mokey's New Friends by Connie Arnold. The book is very well written and descriptive. I liked that the book involved many unexpected friendships. I liked how the book sort of ended in a cliffhanger, but still had closure. The book is full of action and adventure. The characters are likeable, because they are willing to be friends with everyone. The illustrations by Marina Movshina are charming watercolor illustrations that help to depict each scene. The book was well developed and thought out. Each character was unique, like Charlie the squirrel who stuttered. Children will enjoy reading this book again and again. I would recommend this book to young readers.
