Moonglow Avenue by Gary Pettigrew is a fun story filled with mostly friendly werewolves, vampires, witches, ghosts, and so on, living in a magic place called Moonglow, which is only reached by going through a portal. Normally humans could not access the portal, but when four youngsters were looking for their runaway dog, they somehow encountered a rusty old gate, which they could not open, until Jasmine tried. Jasmine was special; she had always been able to “see” what the weather would be like, so she was not surprised when she later learned it was her “specialness” that opened the gate. When they went through the gate, they were on an old cobblestone street they had never before seen. Empty houses lined the street for some distance, but beyond that the houses were well lit, and obviously occupied. A gang of teenage vampires teased and threatened the four, but a good witch, Sapphire, caused a bright light to shine around them, and the vampires scattered. Sapphire then invited the four to her house, to find out how they got into Moonglow. Soon, thereafter, the action heated up substantially with new and interesting events.
Moonglow Avenue is written for middle grade students, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, too, and I’m a LONG way beyond middle grade! The story was really a lot of fun to read. There were good guys and bad guys. However, in a refreshing switch from the usual paranormal story, the witches, vampires, ghosts, and werewolves were the good guys. Moonglow Avenue is a story your pre-teen children will love, and one you can enjoy while they are away at school. Gary Pettigrew built the realm of Moonglow superbly, and peopled it with intriguing paranormal characters. I recommend this fine book not only for your children, but for any adults who enjoy a little light reading once in a while.
