We all have our fears. Some are common to many while others are unique to each of us. In Moshe Comes to Visit, Tehila Sade Moyal tackles the issue of fear and how it can be dealt with. The story features a period in a young boy’s life where he is in constant fear of the existence of monsters when he goes to sleep. His imagining these hideous creatures causes him to panic, which forces his parents to continuously intervene as they try to reveal and catch the monsters. Then an idea dawns on his father which solves the problem. However, the fears do not end at this point and the boy soon realizes that his mother has her own fears too ... when Moshe comes to visit.
The story is captivating and part of this is because of the beautiful illustrations contained in the book, the illustrator being Fatima Pires. Moshe Comes to Visit by Tehila Sade Moyal is written skillfully and in the first person by the boy who first experiences the nightmares. As I read the book, it was easy for me to imagine myself in the boy’s shoes. Since the book is written for children who may be experiencing harrowing nightmares, writing in the first person is a great way to engage them. The theme addressed by Tehila Sade Moyal in Moshe Comes to Visit, of how to deal with fear, is also very relevant. Moyal provides a brilliant and practical way of dealing with distress, and makes the reader feel that they are not alone in their fear.
